Issue Position: Transportation Funding and Mass Transit

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2014
Issues: Transportation

For a number of reasons, the recent passage of a comprehensive, bipartisan transportation bill was not just smart. It was necessary. Pennsylvania's roads and bridges--especially important for Pittsburgh--have gone for too long without the critical repairs that will occur under Act 89. Not only will these improvements reduce the toll that driving takes on our cars, more importantly, they will also make our roads and bridges much safer for drivers, bike-riders, and pedestrians alike.

Lack of transportation should not be a barrier to work. However, with local governments having to cut back on mass transit here and across the Commonwealth, this became a reality for many. Thanks to strong support from the business community, labor groups and overwhelming calls from our residents, Act 89 provides necessary funds to protect transit jobs and keep our routes open for years to come. And this program won't just protect jobs--it will create tens of thousands, many right here in the 42nd District as companies seek qualified employees to help build a better future for Pennsylvania's infrastructure and economy.
