Issue Position: Strengthening Public Education

Strengthening Public Education: Public education is the foundation of our future. North Carolina's children must be prepared to begin school and have meaningful access to early intervention and early failure prevention. In order to be competitive nationally and globally, we must support universal pre-k, our K -- 12 programs and strengthen our community colleges and public universities.

While some charter schools have shown success, they need to compete on equal footing and provide equal access to those of all economic backgrounds. Too often busing, as well as free and reduced meal lunches aren't available at these charter schools, dramatically limiting who is able to attend. Our state and our society function best when every child, regardless of race or class, has an equal opportunity at success.
