Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement on the Congressional Budget Office's (CBO) Long-Term Budget Outlook:
"CBO's Long-Term Budget Outlook reaffirms the fact that the only rational way to tackle our long-term deficit is through a balanced approach -- something President Obama and Democrats have been proposing for years, just to be rebuffed by Congressional Republicans at every turn. In fact, the GOP continues to refuse to close a single special interest tax loophole for the purposes of deficit reduction while voting to put billions of dollars on the national credit card to provide further tax breaks to big corporations.
"The fastest and most effective way to reduce our deficit is to put Americans back to work. We've made progress on this critical issue, with 288,000 jobs added to the economy in June and 52 consecutive months of private sector job growth, but we must do more. That is why investing in our national infrastructure, raising the minimum wage, and passing comprehensive immigration reform are so important to creating good-paying jobs for hardworking Americans.
"Despite the constant obstruction from Republicans in Washington, Democrats will continue to fight to grow the economy for the middle class and get our fiscal house in order."
