Issue Position

More than five years have passed since the start of the Great Recession.

Delaware's economy continues to struggle. Throughout the state, many people still are unable to obtain a job. As young Delawareans graduate from our schools and universities, we need to ensure that there will be jobs available for them in our State. To achieve this goal, together we need to renew our focus on increasing the flexibility and competitiveness of Delaware workers and businesses. Our goal should be to establish and strengthen:

· A dynamic system of training and re-training programs available for Delaware workers. Technological improvements and consumer demand are not static. Responsive re-training programs will ensure that Delaware workers are able to adjust rapidly to changes in industry and demand for certain skills.

· Greater investments in education. An improved education system will ensure that Delaware is home to as many qualified and exceptional workers as possible. This will make our State an attractive place for not only businesses but outside talent as well.

· Consistent infrastructure improvements. Many Delawareans are skilled in construction and building trades. Too many of these hardworking individuals are unemployed or underemployed. Meanwhile, Delaware's infrastructure is in need of repair, upgrade, and expansion. We should invest in our workers and in our future economic prosperity by funding infrastructure improvements.

· A culture of innovation and small-business growth. We need to ensure that home-grown Delaware businesses thrive. Our State's small businesses need support and responsive government to continue to be successful, competitive, and employ Delaware workers.

· Strategic assistance to young companies and industries. By creating a supportive and attractive environment for young and innovative industries we can ensure that Delaware will be their base of operations. Businesses' early development phase is vital for their long-term prosperity, and Delaware should be known for its commitment to helping businesses through their early challenges.

· A balance between regulations that protect our health, environment, and safety. We need to always keep in mind the health of our communities when promoting economic and business growth. We cannot afford to forgo one for the other.
