Highway 46 Slated for Significant Safety Upgrade
Thomas Announces Over $33 Million to Widen Highway from Shandon to Paso Robles in Committee-Passed Bill

Congressman Bill Thomas announced that a federal highway funding bill includes $33.461 million to widen a 20-mile span of State Highway 46. The bill, the Transportation Equity Act, was approved by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee this afternoon.

The funding will specifically be used to add an additional lane to each side of the highway between the Shandon rest stop and the intersection at Airport Road near Paso Robles. The funds were included at Thomas' request in the Transportation Equity Act, which would authorize federal highway and transit spending from 2005 through 2010.

The Transportation Equity Act will next be considered by the full House of Representatives, possibly next week. Following House passage, negotiators from the House and Senate must meet to agree upon a final version of the bill, which must then be approved by both bodies. Following the final vote, the bill will head to President Bush for his signature.
