Issue Position

I spent twenty years of my life as a classroom teacher, so education is near and dear to my heart, and I firmly believe that public education concerns everyone in the community, not just parents. For example, if we want to attract doctors, dentists, and creative entrepreneurs to our region, we need to continue to strengthen our public schools, so they will feel comfortable moving their families here. Stronger schools will also help us nurture and retain local talent, so we can stop the so-called "brain drain."

I strongly believe that we need to provide students and teachers with what they need to succeed. We need to make sure all students are adequately prepared for college or career. We need more vocational education for students who do not plan to attend college, and more programs and services for the gifted and talented. We need to focus more attention on anti-bullying programs in the schools, so that all children learn how to behave appropriately. And we need to strengthen support for Del Tech, which provides both job training and general education courses for students -- for two-thirds less than what UD charges.
