Peters Statement on Port of Entry Infrastructure Hearing

Today, U.S. Representative Gary Peters (MI-14) released the following statement on the House Border and Maritime Security Subcommittee hearing, chaired by Rep. Candice Miller (MI-10), on how Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the General Services Administration (GSA) prioritize investments in port of entry infrastructure projects:

"Today the House Homeland Security Committee held a hearing on federal investments in port of entry infrastructure projects. I am encouraged by the Committee's work on this issue given the importance of projects in Michigan, including the New International Trade Crossing customs plaza construction and the Blue Water Bridge plaza expansion.

"Canada is the United States' top trading partner, and trade with Canada supports over 237,000 jobs in Michigan. Ensuring safe, timely and reliable access to Michigan's top export market is essential for our state's manufacturing and agricultural exports. A safe and efficient border crossing that facilitates lawful trade and travel is also critical for Michigan's automotive and tourism industries.

"I introduced the Customs Plaza Construction Act of 2014, which would require the Department of Homeland Security to prioritize construction of customs plazas at land ports of entry with the highest trade volume. I also support the use of a Public Private Partnership or other innovative financing options to ensure that these projects move forward to increase international cooperation and commerce, and create thousands of new jobs in Michigan. I commend Chairman Miller for her work on this issue and for holding a productive hearing today. I look forward to continuing the effort to secure funding for these vital projects."
