Peters Helps Introduce Legislation in Response to Hobby Lobby Decision

Yesterday, U.S. Representative Gary Peters (MI-14), along with members of the House Pro-Choice Caucus, helped introduce the Protect Women's Health from Corporate Interference Act of 2014 in response to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc.

"This critical legislation will ensure that women in Michigan and across the country continue to have access to essential health care services," said Rep. Peters. "This bill prevents employers from picking and choosing specific services to deny coverage so that women can make their own health care decisions without interference from their bosses."

The Protect Women's Health from Corporate Interference Act of 2014 would explicitly prohibit for-profit employers that maintain a group health plan for their employees from using religious beliefs to deny employees coverage of vital health services required by federal law. The bill is narrowly tailored, and keeps in place the existing exemption from the contraceptive coverage requirement for houses of worship and accommodation for religious non-profits.
