Schumer Pushes for This Coming August 7th to Be "National Lighthouse & Lighthouse Preservation Day"; Lighthouses Act of 1789 Extended Federal Control & Funding to Lighthouses--Was Signed by George Washington 225 Years Ago on August 7th

U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today introduced a resolution that would designate August 7th, 2014 as "National Lighthouse and Lighthouse Preservation Day". The Senator introduced the resolution in advance of August 7th, which will mark the 225th anniversary of President George Washington's signing of the Lighthouse Act of 1789, which established the federal government's role in supporting lighthouses, beacons, buoys, and public piers.

"For more than two centuries, lighthouses have guided mariners across the Great Lakes and helped them return safely to dry land," said Schumer. "It's important that we recognize the tremendous role these iconic structures play in our maritime commerce and to preserve the legacy and history they embody. I hope my colleagues will join me to declare this coming August 7th as National Lighthouse and Lighthouse Preservation Day."

Schumer introduced the bill along with Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Angus King (I-Maine).
