Governor Maggie Hassan issued the following statement after signing today HB 1624, a measure modernizing the juvenile justice system to ensure rehabilitation of juveniles and preservation of juvenile rights:
"Treating 17-year-olds as minors, barring the most extreme circumstances, is an appropriate and just policy that will help reduce recidivism among young people. HB 1624 is a bipartisan measure that helps preserve juvenile rights, while ensuring that the most serious offenses can still be brought to the adult courts. I thank legislators from both parties and all of the advocates whose efforts on this bill will help strengthen our juvenile justice system."
