Daines Recognized For Efforts to End Mass NSA Spying

A coalition of privacy and civil liberties groups has recognized Representative Steve Daines for his efforts to end mass surveillance by the National Security Agency (NSA).

The Stand Against Spying coalition, which is made up of more than dozen liberal, conservative and libertarian-leaning groups, awarded Daines an "A,' the highest possible rating, for taking "steps to enact meaningful surveillance reform."

"Upholding the Fourth Amendment and protecting Montanans privacy and civil liberties from government overreach is one of my top priorities. Mass surveillance by the NSA is a direct affront to those rights," Daines said. "I will continue fighting for real reforms that end the federal government's blanket collection of Americans' personal information and provide Americans with the comprehensive privacy protections they deserve."

Criteria for the rating included Daines' cosponsorship of the USA Freedom Act and his support of the Massie-Lofgren Amendment to close warrantless "backdoor" searches of Americans' emails, browsing and chat history.

Daines has been a leader in protecting Montanans' privacy from federal overreach, fighting to end the NSA's mass-data collection program and introducing legislation to repeal federal REAL ID requirements.
