Baldwin Introduces Expanded Child Tax Credit Would extend eligibility of existing child tax credit to families with 17 and 18 year old children
April 14, 2005
On the eve of the federal taxpayer deadline, Representative Tammy Baldwin reintroduced legislation in the House of Representatives to expand the child tax credit to benefit families with 17 and 18 year old children.
"Imagine being a parent who has benefited from the child tax credit throughout your child's school years only to learn that as you face the added expense of college, that $1,000 credit disappears," said the lawmaker.
"With soaring gas prices and eroding pay and benefits, working families today are being financially squeezed more than ever. The costs they face with 17 and 18 year old children at home are no less, and often more, than those for younger children. Extending the child tax credit to the parents of these children is a matter of tax fairness," Baldwin said.
The Tax Credit for American Families Act would help an additional 8 million families nationwide, and approximately 162,000 families in Wisconsin. "Instead of providing tax cuts for the very wealthiest in our society, why aren't we helping the people who need it most - middle and lower income families whose children are just preparing to go to college?" Baldwin asked.
