Horsford Votes For Amendment To Prevent Domestic Spying

Today, Representative Steven Horsford (NV-4) voted for an amendment to H.R. 4870, the 2015 Department of Defense Appropriations Act, to shut two surveillance "backdoors" used by the National Security Agency (NSA) to gather information on American citizens. The amendment prohibits the NSA from searching government databases for information pertaining to U.S. citizens without a warrant and prevents the NSA from placing "backdoors" into commercial products.

"Congress needs to make the necessary reforms to NSA programs to ensure that privacy is protected," Horsford said. "This amendment safeguards privacy by closing NSA loopholes and denying funding for programs that trample constitutional rights."

The amendment was supported by a broad coalition of groups including the American Civil Liberties Union, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Google, Demand Progress, Generation Opportunity, Campaign for Liberty, the Liberty Coalition, and Public Knowledge.

The measure passed by a vote of 293-123.
