Issue Position: Public Safety

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2014

Enhancing public safety is one of my top priorities. I've led the charge to reform our state's bail laws and keep violence out of our communities by focusing on an offender's risks, not their resources.

I'm leading the fight in Trenton to establish mental health background checks for those seeking gun permits. I also authored the law that increases penalties for illegal gun trafficking.

I have also instituted legislation that allows police officers to impound vehicles in cases that involve illegal weapons, drugs, or prostitution, effectively removing vehicles of crime from our streets.

At the same time, it is vital that we give first responders the support they need. These individuals risk their lives every day to keep our communities safe, and I have focused on instituting programs that help them gain and retain employment, and assist their families in times of need.

In Congress, I will continue my fight enhance public safety and stand up for our first responders and their families.
