Rep. Capito Votes to Fund National Defense

U.S. Representative Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) voted yes today on legislation to fund our nation's defense for the next fiscal year. H.R. 4870, the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, passed the House of Representatives 340-73.

"One of the most important responsibilities of Congress is ensuring our nation's defense. This important legislation ensures much-needed funding for our national defense and provides for our troops with a 1.8 percent pay increase. It also rejects the Obama administration's proposed cuts to the Army National Guard, secures the future of the Army National Guard in West Virginia, and includes funding to upgrade C-130 aircraft in Charleston. I am proud to support this bill and provide for our troops serving stateside and overseas," Rep. Capito said.

This legislation would:

Appropriate more than $490 billion for the Defense Department

Give troops a 1.8 percent pay increase

Provide $31 billion for military health programs

Maintain end strength levels at more than 350,000 for the Army National Guard

Upgrade the National Guard's C-130 fleet for $2 billion

Prohibit the DoD from spending any funds appropriated under this bill to violate Section 1035 of the fiscal year 2014 National Defense Authorization Act, which requires 30 days' notice to Congress before transferring a prisoner from the Guantanamo Bay prison.
