Rep. Capito Supports Childhood Cancer Research

U.S. Representative Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) has cosponsored legislation to improve and expand federal research into childhood cancers.

H.R. 2607, the Caroline Pryce Walker Conquer Childhood Cancer Reauthorization Act, would help expand the development of treatments and potential cures for childhood cancer. Caroline Pryce Walker, daughter of former Rep. Deborah Price (R-Ohio), died of neuroblastoma at age 9 in 1999.

This legislation would address innovations and advances in research for pediatric cancer since the original bill was enacted in 2008; Rep. Capito voted for the original legislation in 2008.

"Childhood cancer research has progressed in the last five years, and this important reauthorization will allow federal research efforts to expand and improve. Children with cancer need specific treatments and approaches, and cancer and its treatments often respond differently in children versus adults. This legislation would expand opportunities for research and improve children's lives, and I am proud to support this important research," Rep. Capito said.

The bill has 56 cosponsors and was introduced by the co-chairs of the Congressional Childhood Cancer Caucus, Reps. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and Michael McCaul (R-Texas). Rep. Capito is a member of the Congressional Childhood Cancer Caucus.

U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-R.I) introduced the companion bill, S. 1251, in the Senate.
