Issue Position: Take Politics Out of the Department of Insurance

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2014

The Department of Insurance was given immense power by the California voters with the hope that the Department would work to protect consumers from bad business practices and unfair rate increases. But too often, the Department of Insurance has seemed more interested in playing politics. When the California Insurance Commissioner drives insurers out the state just to score political points, the result is less competition and ultimately fewer choices and higher rates for all Californians. The Insurance Commissioner has a duty to protect consumers and foster a business climate that will improve our state's economy. The position shouldn't just be a stepping-stone to higher office. We can do better.
