U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, of Chicago, has won House approval of an amendment to provide funding aimed at preparing students in predominately Black colleges and universities for careers in national security and intelligence.
The amendment is part of the new Intelligence Authorization Act and wold provide grants to predominantly Black institutions to offer advanced foreign language education, foreign study and cultural immersion programs to increase diversity in the national security and intelligence community, Kelly said.
Roughly 22 percent of the Central Intelligence Agency's employees are minority members, Kelly said her amendment will help increase the ranks of minority intelligence experts.
The proposal was approve Friday and sent on for Senate consideration.
Kelly respresents Kankakee Couinty and portions of Will and Cook counties.
