Polis Comments on 2014 Pride Month

Statement

Date: June 9, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Representative Jared Polis (CO-02) today made the following statement recognizing Pride month:

The 2014 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month offers us the opportunity to reflect upon an unprecedented number of victories for the equality movement over the past year.

From last June's historic Supreme Court decision in Windsor that paved the way for all couples to receive equal recognition under federal law, to the six states that began granting same-sex marriage licenses for the first time, the march toward LGBT equality has never looked as promising as it does today. Across the country, public opinion is rapidly shifting away from prejudice and injustice, and toward freedom and acceptance. Court systems in state after state are recognizing that government-sanctioned bigotry has no place in our society, as they strike down discriminatory marriage bans.

Though the progress over the past year has been significant, the road to equality and justice for all is not yet complete. While Pride is a time for celebration, it is also a time to recognize that our work is not done until all Americans are judged based on their character and conduct, rather than who they are or who they love.
