EPA Names New Superfund Site in Maine

Statement

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree issued the following statement after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) added the site of the Keddy Mill to the national Superfund list. Pingree is a member of the House Appropriations Committee and the Interior Appropriations Subcommittee which sets funding levels for the EPA.

This is an important next step toward cleaning up the Keddy Mill but now the EPA needs the money needed to get the job done. Cleaning up this site will turn what is now a liability for Windham into an asset by reclaiming a prime piece of real estate in the heart of town.

The money needs to be there to do the work however, which is why I have fought and will continue to fight to increase funding for the EPA and the Superfund program. Republicans in the House have proposed slashing the EPA's budget by one-third and letting corporations off the hook for fees they now pay into the Superfund budget. Those kind of cuts would devastate the federal government's ability to clean up sites like Keddy Mill.
