Representative Steve Daines today released the following statement in response to a new Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) audit revealing that more than 57,000 veterans have waited more than 90 days to receive their first medical appointment at VA medical centers nationwide:
"This audit confirms the existence of a problem that the VA has known about for far too long: our veterans are being forced to wait too long to receive the care they need and the services they deserve. Montana's veterans deserve nothing short of the very best, and it's clear that they have too often been failed by a system burdened by bureaucracy and chronic inefficiencies. This needs to change--that's why I've fought for policies that require accountability at the VA, promote flexibility in where veterans receive care they need, and ensure that the VA works more efficiently and effectively for our veterans."
Daines also commented on reports that the Montana VA facility at Fort Harrison and community based outpatient clinic in Billings require "further review and investigation" from the VA:
"I deeply value the work that the Montana VA does on behalf of Montana's veterans and as the VA continues their review, I am committed to continuing to work closely with the leaders of Montana's VA system to ensure our veterans receive the care they deserve in a timely manner and to make all necessary reforms, were any inappropriate or substandard practices at Montana VA facilities to come to light."
