U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) issued the following statement today regarding reports confirmed today by the State Department that Russia has sent tanks and rocket launchers into eastern Ukraine to support separatists there:

"I condemn Putin's apparent decision to send tanks and rocket launchers into Ukraine, which represents a major escalation in the Kremlin's campaign to undermine the legitimately elected government of Ukraine.

"In the wake of Moscow's latest provocation, I call again on the administration to impose tougher sectoral sanctions against Moscow and provide increased military assistance to Kyiv-including anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons, as well as other direct military assistance in order to enable the people of Ukraine and their newly elected democratic government to defend themselves against Russian aggression.

"In his June 4 speech in Poland, President Obama said, "Our free nations will stand united so that further Russian provocations will only mean more isolation and costs for Russia.' The President's words have to mean something."
