WASHINGTON - Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-N.Y.) released the following statement on the death of Pope John Paul II this past weekend:

"I join those in New York City, across the country and every corner of the world in mourning the passing of Pope John Paul II.

"As an important spiritual and world leader, Pope John Paul II brought compassion, hope and love to people and communities all over the world. Hailing from his homeland of Poland and speaking eight different languages, he taught us about accepting differences, opening ourselves to other cultures and embracing all the world has to offer.

"He will be remembered for his extraordinary strength in defending the values that we all try so deeply to preserve - freedom, justice, equality, and peace for all races and religions - and his devotion to the Catholic Church.

"We are so fortunate to have witnessed the many spiritual and humanitarian contributions Pope John Paul II has brought to the world. He will be greatly missed, and we will continue to be guided by his lasting legacy."
