U.S. Representative Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) voted yes today on H.R. 4435, the fiscal year 2015 National Defense Authorization Act. The bill passed the House 325-98.
"By providing for our troops and our national defense, this bill strengthens our country and our place in the world. We uphold our commitment to our service men and women by equipping them on the battlefield and bolstering the benefits they need here at home. We also recognize the importance of our National Guard and set aside nearly $110 million to modernize the C-130 Hercules aircraft, which is a vital component of the West Virginia Air National Guard. I am proud to support this legislation and the men and women who protect our nation."
This legislation would:
Authorize more than $521 billion for national defense programs
Mandate a 1.8 percent automatic pay raise for troops
Provide more than $45 million for suicide prevention behavioral and psychological programs
Reject proposals from the Defense Department to reduce the National Guard force to fewer than 350,000 members
Prohibit U.S. military contact and cooperation with Russia's military until the secretary of Defense certifies the Russian military is no longer illegally occupying Crimea.
