Horsford Votes Against McCarthyesque GOP Resolution

Today, Representative Steven Horsford (NV-4) voted against the House resolution to hold former IRS official Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress.

"Chairman Issa has completely mishandled this investigation and engaged in partisan tactics not seen in Congress since the days of Senator Joe McCarthy," Horsford said. "As a member of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, I want to get to the truth of the potential IRS targeting of political groups. However, the 5th Amendment applies to all Americans, including Ms. Lerner."

After hearing testimony from 39 witnesses, the Committee has found absolutely no White House involvement or political motivation in the screening of tax exempt applicants. The investigation has cost taxpayers more than $14 million.

More than 30 legal independent experts have concluded Ms. Lerner did not waive her right to remain silent. In addition, the Supreme Court has previously ruled that a witness does not waive his or her 5th Amendment rights by professing his or her innocence.

H.Res. 574 passed by a vote of 231-187.
