Horsford Statement On NV Energy's Plan To Replace Coal-Fired Power Plants With Renewable Alternatives

Today, Representative Steven Horsford (NV-4) praised NV Energy's announcement of their Emission Reduction and Capacity Replacement Plan, which aims to make NV Energy more sustainable and to reduce carbon emissions.

"I applaud NV Energy for their decision to prioritize investments in renewable energy production," Horsford said. "This shift toward green energy will create jobs, reduce carbon emissions, and improve air quality in the surrounding region. Las Vegas was recently ranked as one of America's most polluted cities, and this announcement is a positive step forward to change that. I'm glad partners from NV Energy and local community members, including the Moapa Paiutes, we're able to come together and find a workable solution."

NV Energy plans to close three of its coal-fired power plants in 2014, and another in 2017. NV Energy would also acquire two existing natural gas-fired generating units totaling 496 megawatts, located in North Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Valley.

In addition, NV Energy would acquire two existing solar plants located in Southern Nevada, and begin building the 200 megawatt Moapa Solar Project, located on the Moapa Paiutes reservation, at the end of this year.
