House Foreign Affairs Committee Mark-up

This week, the House Foreign Affairs Committee held a mark-up of H.R. 1771, the North Korea Sanctions Enforcement Act of 2013, H.R. 4449, the Human Trafficking Prevention Act, and H.Res. 600, a resolution urging the government of Afghanistan to pursue and support transparency in their upcoming presidential run-off election. All three bills passed the committee by voice votes and I look forward to them coming before the full House for a vote.

Memorial Day

Monday marked Memorial Day, the annual federal holiday on which we remember those who died while serving in the Armed Forces. As a solider in the Army, I served with The Old Guard at Arlington National Cemetery where I had the solemn honor of assisting with military burials. Each Memorial Day--and every day--let us remember the sacrifices of our fallen comrades and the cause for which they fought.

Remembering Dr. Maya Angelou

This week, we mourn the passing of Dr. Maya Angelou, beloved author, actress, civil rights activist, and professor. Some may not know that she spent part of her childhood in the Natural State living in Stamps, Arkansas. Her life and her teachings were--and will continue to be--an inspiration to millions. May she rest in peace.

Life's Lessons Learned Through the Military

Recently, Admiral William H. McRaven, ninth commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, delivered a commencement address on the life lessons he learned while in Navy SEAL training. I learned many similar lessons firsthand while in the Army.

Staff-Led Veterans Assistance Sessions

Members of my staff will be holding a Veterans Assistance Session in Magnolia, Camden, Ozark, Paris, and Dardanelle next month to provide information and answer any VA related questions.
