State Health Department unveils Healthy South Dakota Web Site
Encouraging South Dakotans to "Live Better. Grow Stronger."
The South Dakota Department of Health is launching a web site aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles for all South Dakotans. HealthySD.gov goes live January 31, 2005, with the goal of providing credible health information and inspiration to help South Dakotans to "Live Better. Grow Stronger."
"Each one of us can take small steps to live a healthier life, whether that's taking the stairs to add physical activity to our day or reaching for an apple instead of a bag of potato chips for an afternoon snack. This site is designed to help South Dakotans take those steps," said Governor Mike Rounds. "There's a wealth of information at the site and we've made sure it's easy to navigate, as well as fun and interesting for all ages."
Information at the site comes from a variety of sources gathered and developed by the Department of Health in the form of articles, research, statistics and links to other health-related web sites. The Governor said the site is a work in progress with more information and resources being added regularly.
The Department of Health will also be using the web site to compile stories from healthy South Dakotans to share with others about how to set and achieve reasonable goals regarding physical activity, nutrition and health. There will be information for businesses, schools and other organizations who are interested in improving the health of their employees.
"Our intent is that people who visit the site will find the inspiration and information they need to make lifestyle changes," said Secretary of Health Doneen Hollingsworth. "We're working hard to make sure this is a responsible place for people to come to and learn about being healthier. We won't be promoting any fad diets, for example, although there may be important information about them so you can make wise decisions."
"There's a lot of health information out there, and what we're trying to do with HealthySD.gov is gather as many credible sources together as possible and then categorize it so people can find the information they need. We encourage all South Dakotans who are able to go to www.HealthySD.gov and discover how much helpful and healthful information is there."
