Reps. Schneider and Drury Tackle Gun Issues at Gun Safety Forum

U.S. Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) and State Representative Scott Drury (IL-58) discussed the gun violence problem plaguing our country and Illinois during a gun safety forum in Deerfield yesterday. The event, hosted by Rep. Drury, featured presentations to an over-flow crowd from Rep. Schneider, Rep. Drury, Moms Demand Action and Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence.

"It's no secret that enacting new measures in Congress that seek to reduce gun violence will be a challenge, but I firmly believe these are reforms worth fighting for," Schneider said. "At a time when as much as 40 percent of gun purchases are done without a background check and every day more than 30 Americans are murdered using guns, this issue is too important to just move on and accept the status quo."

Drury was pleased that people representing all sides of the gun debate attended the forum. "The forum presented our community with the opportunity to hear differing points of view and learn where there is common ground," Drury said. "Everyone agrees that we need to end the scourge of gun violence in our nation and state. Using that as our foundation, we must implement responsible firearms regulations that make that goal a reality."

Schneider supports expanded background checks for gun sales, banning armor piercing bullets and expanding access to mental health care. He is a cosponsor of the Gun Trafficking Prevention Act that would make gun trafficking a federal crime. He has also hosted two gun violence prevention roundtables with community leaders and local police chiefs.

Drury is an outspoken advocate in the General Assembly for responsible firearms regulations. As a former federal prosecutor, Drury has first-hand experience with the proliferation of guns in the Chicagoland area. Drury is the chief sponsor of legislation (HB4319) that would require permission to enter a private residence with a concealed weapon and prohibit concealed carry at venues where video gambling is allowed.
