Udall, Cornyn Introduce Bipartisan Resolution Commemorating Cinco de Mayo

U.S. Senators Mark Udall (D-Colo.) and John Cornyn (R-Texas) introduced a bipartisan resolution today commemorating Cinco de Mayo. The resolution recognizes the historical significance of the 1862 Battle of Puebla and highlights the courage of Mexican forces against the invading French army.

"Mexican-Americans have a long and rich history in Colorado and throughout much of the West. Our nation would be very different today if it were not for Mexico's victory at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862," Udall said. "I am proud to once again lead the effort in the U.S. Senate to commemorate this historic battle and recognize the courageous people of Mexico and their fight for freedom."

"On Cinco de Mayo we celebrate with our neighbors in Mexico the rich and diverse history of both of our nations and the bravery of a general from Goliad, Texas, who was willing to sacrifice everything for the cause of freedom," Cornyn said. "I am pleased to join Senator Udall in introducing this bipartisan resolution honoring Cinco de Mayo, which stands as a reminder of humanity's enduring quest for freedom, and the power it has to inspire bravery, selflessness and greatness in all of us."

The resolution was co-sponsored by seven senators and:

Recognizes the courage of Mexican forces against a powerful invader;
Recognizes the historical struggle for freedom of the people of Mexico; and,
Calls upon the people of the United States to observe Cinco de Mayo with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
Udall and Cornyn have worked across the aisle to commemorate Cinco de Mayo, including leading previous U.S. Senate resolutions marking the day.
