Bera Condemns Kidnapping of Nigerian Girls, Co-Sponsors Resolution Supporting American Assistance

Congressman Ami Bera, M.D.(CA-7) released the following statement on H. Res. 573, a bipartisan resolution he is co-sponsoring that condemns the abduction of nearly 300 school girls in Nigeria. The House Foreign Affairs Committee unanimously passed it earlier today.

"I stand strongly by the Administration's decision to assist Nigerian authorities as they try to rescue nearly 300 girls who were kidnapped by Boko Haram simply for going to school," said Bera. "It is absolutely deplorable that any group could abduct schoolgirls and threaten to sell them into slavery or force them into marriage. As the father of a daughter, I strongly believe girls deserve the same educational opportunities as everyone else, free from intimidation and fear. America has a duty to both to lead by example on women's equality issues and to work closely with the international community to protect and promote these values worldwide. I'm glad that Democrats and Republicans are standing together in support of this resolution, and I remain committed to supporting the recovery of the kidnapped victims."
