Daines Announces Hearing on Northern Cheyenne Lands Act

Representative Steve Daines today announced that the House Natural Resources Subcomittee on Indian and Alaska Native Affairs will hold a hearing tomorrow on Daines' Northern Cheyenne Lands Act.

Daines will be joined at tomorrow's hearing by Northern Cheyenne Tribe President Llevando "Cowboy" Fisher, who will testify before the Committee about the importance of this legislation.

The hearing will be held at 12:00PM MT (2:00PM ET) tomorrow in 1324 Longworth House Office Building. The hearing may be watched live here. Video of Daines' and Fisher's remarks will be available following tomorrow's hearing.

The Northern Cheyenne Lands Act works to provide the Northern Cheyenne Tribe with a resolution to long-fought land and mineral resource claims against the United States. Daines' bill allows the Northern Cheyenne Tribe more control over their lands and mineral resources, strengthening tribal sovereignty for the Tribe and increasing the Tribe's ability to serve their people.

"The Northern Cheyenne Lands Act provides the Northern Cheyenne Tribe with a long-overdue resolution to the federal government's breach of trust with the Tribe. This legislation will empower the Northern Cheyenne people to control their land and their resources, and help protect the Tribe's heritage for future generations," Daines stated. "I'm glad that the Subcommittee on Indian and Alaska Native Affairs has recognized the importance to this legislation, which will ensure that the Tribe is better able to use their land and protect the sites most sacred to them, and look forward to hearing President Fisher's testimony at tomorrow's hearing."
