CORNYN STATEMENT ON IRAQI ELECTIONS

Iraq is making solid progress on the hard road to freedom, Cornyn says

WASHINGTON-U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, made the following statement Sunday regarding the elections in Iraq:

"Naysayers here and around the world should take note that the election was a strong blow to terrorists and a major step toward Iraq taking control of its future.

"Despite the predictions of countless critics, the high participation in these elections showed that Iraq is making solid progress on the hard road to freedom. Less than two years ago the only voice that mattered in the country was that of Saddam Hussein. Now, Iraqis have the freedom to let their voices be heard.

"It's important to remember that this election is just the beginning. We will see the true impact of freedom in Iraq over the next generation, as responsible leaders rise and the remains of tyranny are wiped away. With the victories won and newfound freedoms gained, all will know that the lives risked and lost were not in vain."

Sen. Cornyn traveled to Iraq in December where he met with Texas troops, and was briefed by U.S. and Iraqi military commanders on efforts there heading into Sunday's election. He has visited all 17 active duty military installations in Texas.

Within the Armed Services Committee, Sen. Cornyn serves on the following subcommittees: Readiness and Management Support, Emerging Threats and Capabilities, Personnel, and Strategic Forces.
