WIBC - Despite FIFA Refusal, Calls to Strip Russia of 2018 World Cup Continue

An Indiana congressman isn't giving up on a push to strip Russia of soccer's World Cup, as punishment for the occupation of Crimea.

The soccer governing body FIFA has already dismissed calls to find a new host country for the 2018 tournament. Fourth District Congressman Todd Rokita says he still plans to introduce a House resolution urging FIFA to reconsider. He says he hopes enough other countries will add their voices to put pressure on the organization.

Rokita says losing the World Cup and its worldwide audience in the billions would hit Russia in the pocketbook.

Indiana Senator Dan Coats wrote FIFA last month urging the relocation of the tournament. He notes FIFA banned Yugoslavia from participating in the 1994 World Cup because of the Bosnian War.

On Monday, the White House froze the assets of seven more Russian officials and 17 Russian companies. Rokita and Coats both call the latest sanctions "too little, too late."

Coats has introduced an amendment to block transactions with the Russian agency which exports weapons systems, and says he's working with fellow senators on a package of further sanctions.

Rokita says it's unclear whether any sanctions can succeed in pushing Russia out of Crimea, but says the U.S. must begin with action strong enough to prevent further incursions. He says the U.S. should revive plans for a missile-defense system in Poland.
