McConnell Co-Sponsors Bill Targeting IRS Employee Bonuses

U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell joined Senators Pat Roberts (R-KS), Mike Enzi (R-WY) and John Thune (R-SD) in introducing a bill to prohibit law-breaking or tax-delinquent employees of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from receiving bonuses.

The "No Bonuses for Delinquent IRS Employees Act" would prohibit the IRS from providing performance-based bonuses to IRS employees who owe back taxes and those who have entered into an installment payment plan for back taxes until it is paid off. According to a recent report from the Treasury Department's Inspector General for Tax Administration, nearly $3 million in bonuses are being awarded to workers who have violated the tax laws or who have been subject to serious infractions of employee policy.

"I appreciate Senators Roberts, Enzi and Thune for their efforts to prohibit IRS employees who owe back taxes from receiving bonuses, and I strongly support this legislation," Senator McConnell said. "Given the accountability and on-going fiscal responsibility issues at the IRS, Congress must intervene in this instance to protect taxpaying citizens from further abuse by the IRS."
