West Virginia's tax structure is out of date and in need of a serious overhaul. Our taxing regulations frighten new businesses from relocating to our state, and stifle the growth of our current businesses and industries. Three of our five neighboring states have a lower corporate tax rate, which means that businesses looking to move into the region would most likely find it more attractive to move to one of those states rather than West Virginia.
We can help smaller companies just beginning to do business here by repealing the personal property tax on business assets due to the fact that they must pay property taxes whether they make a profit or not. Doing so would send a signal to everyone that we truly are "open for business."
It's time we re-examine the way we do business as a state, and re-think the policies that have brought us to our current economic conditions.
