Dear Neighbors,
I was honored to speak at the FED ED Champion of Public Education Award Luncheon this past week. I met with educators across the 8th District, and we talked about how important public school education is to our nation's future. Without the public school system, I would not be where I am today. I am thankful our District has so many dedicated, hardworking professionals in our schools.
Additionally, I signed the discharge petition to allow comprehensive immigration reform to come up for a vote. The bipartisan Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act would secure our borders, uphold existing immigration laws, create an earned pathway to citizenship and help businesses and workers by creating millions of jobs.
I then spoke at a meeting with the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. We discussed why our country needs comprehensive immigration reform now -- and how it will slash $900 billion dollars off of our deficit in 20 years.
I also met with Harper College this week, and discussed how we could work together to make their new Regional Apprenticeship program a success. By bringing together Advanced Manufacturing Technicians with Harper to develop curriculum, tap into job centers, and train workers at some of the wonderful small manufacturing firms in our district, we can revive the American economy.
Later today, I am formally announcing the U.S. House of Representatives Congressional Art Competition at Addison Trail High School. Students from all high schools across the 8th District can submit entries to my office. Winners are recognized both in the District and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol. I am looking forward to seeing the creative submissions from our students.
I hope you are having a great week.
Sincerely,
Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth
