This Week's Duckworth Diary - April 18, 2014

Statement

Dear Neighbors,

This week the House of Representatives adjourned in Washington for a District Work Period. I have had a busy week meeting with constituents in the 8th District.

On Monday, I met with the Schaumburg Education Association. We discussed the importance of STEM education and how a strong public school system will prepare the next generation of Americans for the jobs of the future and promote economic security.

I also was able to tour the Elgin Technology Center and learn about the work they do to ensure a creative workspace for startups and small businesses in our District. One of the groups renting space there is the high school robotics team called "Got Robot?" I was able to congratulate them on their recent victories in competition, and they taught me how to code my own application. I also encouraged them to apply for the U.S. House STEM App Competition which closes on April 30. You can find details about the competition here.

Additionally, I spoke to the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference during their business meeting. We discussed the importance of local government and their contributions to work on the Federal level, especially in regard to transportation and e-commerce. I also gave them an update on my recent meeting with the FAA Administrator about the significant noise issues for our neighbors living near O'Hare airport's new runway.

On Thursday, I held a Congress at Your Corner event in Bensenville. I was pleased to meet so many of my neighbors and discuss issues that are most important to them such as preserving Social Security and Medicare and how to create more jobs in the district.

I was also proud to announce a $70,560 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) for Glendale Heights. Funds from the grant will go towards modifications to the fire station to install a new exhaust system to help eliminate fumes from the vehicles. Firefighters put their lives on the line for public safety each and every day, and we need to make sure that they have the resources that are required for them to succeed.

I hope those who have been celebrating Passover this week have had a good one, and hope that those celebrating Easter on Sunday have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

Congresswoman Duckworth
