YOUNG: Save American Workers Act Would Help Hourly Workers Who Need Pay Increase Most

Statement

Rep. Todd Young (IN-9) joined House Speaker John Boehner, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, and other members of Republican leadership at a press conference this morning to preview his H.R. 2575, the Save American Workers Act, being considered by the U.S. House of Representatives this week. Debate on the bill will begin later today, and will conclude tomorrow. A vote is expected Thursday afternoon.

The transcript of his remarks is below.

"Good morning. It's time that we restore an America that works. And that's why we're here today, to talk about the Save American Workers Act. As I go around my district, I hear from people that are talking a lot about their wages, the state of the economy and so forth. Over in the Senate, they're debating a 25 percent increase in the minimum wage, meanwhile so many of our hourly workers are experiencing a drop in the number of hours and wages that they enjoy of as much as 25 percent.

"Now, these aren't high-income workers. On balance these are cafeteria workers, these are substitute teachers, these are adjunct professors. These are folks who help us in terms of serving at restaurants. On balance, these are folks who can least afford to see a cut in their take-home pay. And so we want to restore the 40 hour work week.

"The Save American Workers Act would do that by repealing the provision within "Obamacare" that defines full-time as 30 hours. It's a bipartisan effort. We have bipartisan co-sponsorship of this effort. And it's time we start to replace the most egregious provisions of "Obamacare" that are hurting American workers."
