Stutzman: "Republicans Weren't Elected to Sit on the Bench"

Statement

U.S. Congressman Marlin Stutzman issued the following statement today in support of the House-passed Republican budget.

"Republicans weren't elected to sit on the bench. We have to break the cycle of red ink and tax hikes that created Washington's $17 trillion debt crisis. Taxpayers are sick of gimmicks and empty promises. We have to make the difficult choices today.

"House Republicans have advanced a clear alternative to the President's stubborn path of debt and decline. While President Obama's budget includes $1.8 trillion in new taxes and $791 billion in higher spending, the House Republican budget actually balances and makes ends meet without raising taxes. After House Democrats soundly rejected President Obama's tax and borrow approach, it's clear the Senate and White House must come to grips with the seriousness of our economic crisis."

Background:

Today, the House of Representatives passed The Path to Prosperity: A Responsible, Balanced Budget by a vote of 219-205. The budget cuts $5.1 trillion in spending, balances the budget in ten years, and reforms major entitlement programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Food Stamps.

President Obama's budget would raise taxes by $1.8 trillion, increase spending by $791 billion, and never balance the budget. Yesterday, the President's budget (offered in the form of a substitute amendment) was rejected by a vote of 2-413.
