Polis Lauds Committee Passage of Bipartisan Charter School Bill in 36-3 Vote

Statement

Representative Jared Polis (CO-02) today made the following statement after the bipartisan Success and Opportunity Through Quality Charter Schools Act overwhelmingly passed the House Committee on Education and the Workforce by a vote of 36-3:

"I am thrilled that the Education and Workforce Committee has come together to advance this bipartisan bill in such an overwhelming manner. Today the Committee recognized the important role that public charter schools play in increasing high-quality educational options for students and families.

"This legislation makes substantial improvements over the status quo in our education system by investing in stronger charter school authorizing practices, replicating success, ensuring that public charter schools share best practices with traditional public schools, and adding equity protections to help public charter schools serve low-income students, students with disabilities, and English language learners. This is the best version of the bill yet, and has substantial improvements over the version that passed 365-54 in the 112th Congress.

"Chairman Kline and Ranking Member Miller showed true leadership in working together to bring forward a bill that will improve the public school choice ecosystem, lead to stronger charter school policies that reward success and punish failure, and ultimately improve outcomes for students. I look forward to working with my colleagues to ensure that H.R. 10 experiences similarly strong support on the House floor."
