Horsford: Ryan Budget Will Hurt Nevadans

Today, Representative Steven Horsford (NV-4) voted against the budget proposed by House Republicans and authored by Representative Paul Ryan (WI-1).

"Nevadans are tired of House Republicans' backwards values and priorities," Horsford said. "We need a budget that protects and preserves Medicare, invests in education for our children's future, and creates jobs and economic growth. Their proposed budget will do the opposite, and instead cast a shadow over the American dream."

Recent data from the White House details the full impact of the Washington budget proposed by House Republicans on Nevadan seniors, students, workers, and middle class families:

Seniors

H.Con.Res. 96 would end the Medicare guarantee and raise health care costs for seniors.
26,924 Nevadan seniors would pay more for prescription drugs, as the Ryan Republican budget reopens the Medicare Part D donut hole.

Education

660 Nevadan children would be forced out of Head Start.
27,380 disadvantaged students would lose extra academic support through Title I they need to succeed, with 260 fewer teachers and aides to help these students.
College students in Nevada will receive $15.6 million less in Pell Grants, preventing 2,810 students from receiving Pell Grants that they need to help pay for college.

Jobs and Middle Class Families

The budget will cause the loss of three million American jobs in 2016 year alone.
It would raise taxes on middle class families with children by more than $2,000 -- to pay for a more than $200,000 tax break for millionaires.
It would reduce America's economic growth by 2.5% in 2016.

H.Con.Res. 96 was approved by the House by a vote of 219-205.
