Cornyn Bill to Ensure Every Military Vote Is Counted Headed to Senate Floor

U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) issued the following statement after the Senate Rules Committee passed his bipartisan Safeguarding Elections for our Nation's Troops through Reforms and Improvements Act ("The SENTRI Act") unanimously:

"The 2012 election made clear that there are still too many barriers to military service members and their families having their votes counted. These brave men and women put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe, and the least we can do is ensure that everything possible is being done to safeguard their voting rights.

"I encourage the Majority Leader to take this legislation up immediately, and look forward to its consideration by the full Senate."

The SENTRI Act, authored by Sens. Cornyn and Chuck Schumer (D-NY), seeks to end the disenfranchisement of military voters and their families by streamlining the absentee voting process for them and requiring the Defense Department to provide service members with voter assistance as a routine part of their annual training. The legislation would also take critical steps to strengthen the protection of service members' voting rights by ensuring that states send out absentee ballots to troops and their family members at least 46 days before Election Day.
