U.S. Senator Tim Kaine released the following statement on today's elections in Afghanistan:

"The Afghan people sent a message of resilience and determination during today's presidential and provincial elections. Initial reporting indicates voter turnout was high. The Afghan people demonstrated a commitment to defy those who seek to intimidate them through violence. Their perseverance and courage is an example for us all. I send my congratulations to all the people of Afghanistan on this historic day for Afghanistan's democracy."
