Congresswoman Matsui Announces Funding for Sacramento Flood Protection Projects in FY 14 Army Corps Work Plan

Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) released the following statement in response to the funding for local flood protection projects that was included in the Army Corps of Engineers Fiscal Year 2014 Work Plan. The work plan allocates over $106 million for Sacramento flood protection projects, an increase of over $34 million from what was specifically allocated in the FY14 Omnibus Appropriations bill. Notably, it includes $1 million for project engineering and design work for the Natomas Levee Improvement Project (NLIP). This is the first time federal funds have been specifically allocated for the NLIP.

"Flood protection is essential to the safety and economic vitality of our region, and it remains my top priority and a top concern for many Sacramento residents. The work plan released by the Army Corps of Engineers demonstrates the strong commitment the federal government has to Sacramento's flood protection projects. The funds allocated in the work plan will go a long way toward strengthening our levees and ensuring our entire region has a robust level of flood protection.

"I am especially pleased that the work plan includes funding for project engineering and design work for the Natomas Levee Improvement Project. This funding demonstrates the Corps' commitment to NLIP, and helps ensure that work can start promptly on this critical project upon congressional authorization. I am optimistic that Congress will be voting on a final Water Resources Development Act by spring and that it will include congressional authorization for the improvements to Natomas' levees.

"The work plan also includes over $10 million for the South Sacramento Streams Group project and $23 million for work on the American River. This funding will allow for the completion of previously authorized improvements to Florin Creek and the American River, and is a major win for the homeowners and businesses in this area, and for the entire region.

"I have worked closely with the Administration, the Army Corps and my colleagues in Congress to ensure the Sacramento region receives the federal funding we need for our flood protection priorities. The Army Corps' Work Plan represents a true investment in our region and will mean real progress on our projects. I will continue to work with all parties, and will continue to fight for every federal dollar possible."
