The Duckworth Diary - March 14, 2014

Statement

Together with Representative Dan Kildee, I wrote a letter to Speaker Boehner in favor of extending unemployment insurance for more than 2 million Americans, 200,000 of whom are Veterans. Nearly 116,000 people in Illinois have lost unemployment insurance since last year and it is time that we act.

I also met with the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers. We discussed the importance of passing a transportation bill to invest in our infrastructure and create jobs.

I attended the Army Women's Foundation's annual recognition of our service women. I am inspired by the leadership of the women I met that evening, and the great work they are doing to move our generation forward. Equality for women means progress for all.

Additionally, I had a great meeting with the Special Olympics Illinois leaders. Unified Soccer teammates Adam Shelton and Adam Lopez showed me their gold medals and talked about how the Special Olympics changed their lives for the better. They will be part of Team Illinois, representing our state at the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games in New Jersey this summer.

Next Tuesday, I am hosting an event at the Glendale Heights VFW Post 2377 to deliver laptops to local Veterans organizations. The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), the State of Illinois Department of Central Management Services, and the National Association of State Agencies for Surplus Property are collaborating with me to donate 25 laptop computers to eligible organizations that train and provide assistance to Veterans.

I hope you are having a great week.

Sincerely,

Congresswoman Duckworth
