26,023 Nevadans Now Cut Off From Unemployment Insurance

Representative Steven Horsford (NV-4) issued the following statement regarding today's new report from House Ways and Means Committee Democrats showing that, by the end of this week, more than 2.05 million Americans will have been cut off from their unemployment insurance:

"As of today, over 2 million Americans have lost their unemployment insurance, including 26,023 Nevadans. That number will continue to grow unless Congress acts. The number of Nevadans hurt by the expiration of benefits will continue to climb until this fever of obstruction breaks in Washington. The unemployed in Nevada have enough stress in their lives; Congress should not be adding to it. We should pass an extension of unemployment insurance immediately."

In an effort to raise awareness for those affected, Representative Horsford launched a new page on his website where constituents can share stories about how the expiration of unemployment insurance benefits has impacted them and their loved ones. The submission form can be found here.

Horsford continued, "I want to share the personal stories of my constituents so that the House GOP can put themselves in the shoes of someone who lost their job at no fault of their own. We cannot ignore these struggling Americans any longer. We demand a vote."

Nationwide, nearly 72,000 people are losing unemployment insurance (on average) every week -- adding to the 1.3 million Americans who lost their unemployment insurance on December 28th, 2013.

Representative Horsford has co-sponsored legislation (H.R. 3824) to extend federal unemployment insurance for three months. However, House Republicans have blocked all efforts to allow a vote on the bill.
