Today, U.S. Congressman Paul A. Gosar, D.D.S. (AZ-04) issued the following statement after the Army Corps of Engineers released its Fiscal Year 2014 work plan, which contained $1.6 million for the Rio de Flag flood control project and $100,000 for the Lower Santa Cruz River Watershed Project:
"One thing I have always strongly advocated for is infrastructure. Today we learned that two major projects I have been working on will be moving forward. These two projects were prioritized in the Army Corps' FY14 work plan. Money has been allocated to these projects, which will help protect the safety of residents and businesses by preventing catastrophic flooding in both Flagstaff and the Lower Santa Cruz River Region."
Jerry Nabours, Mayor of Flagstaff, said: "We are thankful that Congressman Gosar's continued efforts have once again yielded funding for this important project. He understands that investment in this project could yield almost a billion dollars in economic development, eliminate the flood plain and save residents costly flood insurance premiums. We applaud him for his continued support."
Chairman of the Pinal County Board of Supervisors, Supervisor Anthony Smith, said: "This is an important step toward protecting the residents, farms and businesses in Pinal County from major flood events and we want to thank Congressman Gosar for his dedication and steadfast efforts in helping to get this critically important project started."
Mark Killian, Board Chairman of the Lower Santa Cruz River Alliance, said, "We are very pleased the Army Corps of Engineers prioritized funding for the Lower Santa Cruz River Watershed Project, thanks in large part to Congressman Gosar's efforts. The Lower Santa Cruz River has a history of disastrous flooding during major storms. This allocation will help protect farms, housing, communities, businesses and infrastructure across our region."
Maricopa Mayor Christian Price stated: "Congressman Gosar continues to show leadership in Congress by advocating for important projects like the Lower Santa Cruz River Watershed Project. This project will ensure that a catastrophic flood won't devastate homeowners and businesses in our community. We applaud Congressman Gosar for his tireless efforts on our behalf."
