Ukraine: Keating Statement on Russian Aggression in Crimea

Statement

Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Foreign Affairs

Below is a statement from Rep. Bill Keating, Ranking Member of the Europe, Eurasia, and Emerging Threats Subcommittee, on Russia's escalation in Crimea.

"I welcome the Obama Administration's decision to suspend trade talks and military cooperation with Moscow in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Russia's unprovoked military aggression is a violation of international law and of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. If Russia fails to pull back troops to its bases, there must be further consequences, including travel restrictions, asset freezes, trade and economic sanctions, and expulsion from the G-8. I urge the European Union to take similar steps. In the meantime, I am working with the Administration and fellow Members of Congress on an urgently needed package of financial assistance to support Ukraine's transitional government.

"Beyond Ukraine, it is essential that we stand by other countries that are facing Russian pressure, particularly Moldova and Georgia. I also support Poland's call for immediate Article IV consultations within NATO. The Alliance must be prepared to respond to actions that threaten Europe's security and stability. If the Ukrainian government requests it, NATO should expeditiously offer Ukraine a Membership Action Plan."
