Blog: Fifty Years Later: Honoring the Civil Rights Act

Dear Friend,

As Black History Month comes to a close, I believe it is fitting to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and reflect on its significance. The passing of this legislation serves as an important milestone in the struggle for equality in our county.

It is astonishing to reflect that just 50 years ago, the daily lives of Americans were divided along racial lines with the institutionalized belief of "separate but equal." The Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended the segregation of schools and other public places, making it illegal to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. It also prohibited unequal application related to voting registration requirements, which often kept African-Americans from exercising their right to vote. The landmark act of 1964 paved the way for future legislation resulting in the rights that we enjoy today.

Although our country has come a long way in protecting the civil rights of its citizens, we must continue to build on this important work. We must be vigilant to fight efforts that undermine our progress! I will continue to support legislation that reinforces equal rights and opportunities for all and hope you will join me in this cause.
